Role Summary
Air Vehicle Pilots (AVPs) are the U.S. Navy’s Drone Pilot Officers, leading operations for the fleet’s most advanced unmanned aerial systems (UAS). From the deck of an aircraft carrier, they control the MQ-25 Stingray—the Navy’s first unmanned aerial refueling platform—and other future UAVs.
As an AVP, you’ll be at the technological forefront of naval aviation, extending the mission range of manned aircraft, conducting long-endurance surveillance, and shaping the Navy's drone warfare strategy.
Responsibilities
- Operate MQ-25 Stingray UAVs from aircraft carriers to perform aerial refueling missions for:
- F/A‑18 Super Hornet
- EA‑18G Growler
- F‑35C Lightning II
- Develop UAV tactics and procedures for long-range, unmanned aviation support
- Serve ashore as instructors and doctrinal experts for UAV training and development
- Support integration of future platforms like the MQ‑4C Triton
Work Environment
Your duties as an Air Vehicle Pilot span multiple operational theaters:
- At sea: Launch and control UAVs from aircraft carriers, supporting combat missions
- Ashore: Work in training commands, operational UAV units, and mission planning roles
- Worldwide Deployments: Assignments may be stateside or overseas depending on mission
You’ll work in both technical and tactical environments, contributing to the evolution of Navy air power.
Training & Advancement
Initial Training
- Officer Candidate School (OCS)
- 13 weeks in Newport, RI
- Covers Navy leadership, customs, and professional development
Technical Flight Training
- 15–18 months of specialized instruction (similar to manned flight training)
- NAS Pensacola, FL
- Focus areas:
- Aviation safety
- UAV control systems
- In-flight refueling procedures
- UAV tactics and communications
Career Progression

Qualifications & Requirements
- U.S. citizen
- Associate degree required; Bachelor’s preferred
- Must be eligible for secret clearance (or higher)

- Completion of OCS is required prior to Warrant Officer appointment
