AIRCRAFT MECHANIC

Summary

This National Guard position is for an AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, Position Description Number D0483000, and is part of AASF 2, Grand Island, Nebraska Army National Guard.

Duties

As an AIRCRAFT MECHANIC, WG-8852-5/8/10, duties include:

  • Perform inspections, functional checks, and preventive maintenance on assigned aircraft, including pre-inspection, daily inspection, pre- and post-flight inspections, and special inspections such as fuel contamination checks, oil sampling, and inspection of onboard emergency equipment. Conduct checks on hydraulic, electrical, transmission, and power systems.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform unscheduled maintenance on assigned and transient aircraft. Perform the full range of repair and testing of aircraft systems, assemblies, and surfaces. Remove components and assemblies, repair or replace defective parts, and reassemble repaired items into the aircraft. Install, align, and make needed adjustments to major components and assemblies such as engines, propeller/rotors, transmissions, and hydraulic systems. Conduct ground functional tests of all aircraft systems. Service aircraft with oil, de-icing fluid, fuel, and hydraulic fluid. Launch and recover assigned and transient aircraft.
  • May be required to perform additional duties such as fire fighting, aircraft crash/rescue, and snow removal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

  • Military membership in the Nebraska National Guard is required.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Obtain/maintain the level of security clearance/background check required.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Direct Deposit is mandatory.
  • Individuals with military incentive bonuses may be subject to recoupment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (Lautenberg Amendment) of the Gun Control Act.
  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required.

Qualifications

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is a Title 32 excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership in the military grade listed.

OPEN AREAS OF CONSIDERATION: AREA 1, 2 and 3

  • AREA 1: Current permanent and indefinite technicians of the Nebraska Army or Air National Guard; and current Title 5 employees of the Nebraska Military Department who are military members of the Nebraska National Guard.
  • AREA 2: All Drill Status/M-Day members and temporary technicians of the Nebraska Air or Army National Guard.
  • AREA 3: Current military service members who are willing and eligible to become members of the Nebraska Air or Army National Guard.
  • AREA 4: All qualified candidates eligible and willing to become a member of the Nebraska Air or Army National Guard prior to the effective date of hire.

Military Grades: Maximum: E6; Minimum: E1. Compatibility requirements must be met prior to appointment; selectee has 24 months to become qualified in a compatible military assignment.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the skill to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories, and components, and to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications. Must be skilled in the use of hand tools and test equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

  • WG-05: 6 months experience or training demonstrating a basic knowledge of aviation life support equipment, use of common hand tools, and ability to follow written instructions.
  • WG-08: 12 months experience or training demonstrating knowledge of aviation life support equipment; use of common hand tools to make mechanical repairs; removing and installing aircraft parts, components, and accessories with detailed guidance; and following detailed instructions in making routine, recurring repairs.
  • WG-10: 18 months experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting, and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification; coordinating the work of other mechanics; and instructing lower graded mechanics.

Education

There is no substitution of education for this position. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
