Summary

This position is located at Grant Hall, Directorate of Cadet Activities, U.S. Military Academy at West Point. This position is Weather Essential. Incentives will not be paid.

Duties

  • Performs a full range of simple cooking by preparing and cooking items that require little or no processing, such as pancakes, sausage, eggs, hamburgers and fresh or canned vegetables.
  • Prepares food by peeling, chopping, grinding, paring, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, or breading. Weighs, measures and assembles ingredients for regular and modified menu items.
  • Mixes ingredients according to precisely written recipes. Covers, dates, and stores leftovers according to established procedures.
  • Operates a variety of kitchen equipment using gas, electricity, steam or microwave heat sources. Cleans, stores, and maintains all equipment and work areas after each use.
  • Follows established sanitation procedures when handling food. Ensures that foods are stored at the correct temperatures to prevent bacteria growth. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • A Medical Examination is required; work involves continual standing, walking, frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending; must be able to lift or move objects up to 40 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to accept varying or rotating shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 4 hours of initial food sanitation and safety training within 30 days of employment and 4 hours annual refresher training.
  • This position is weather essential.

Qualifications

Resumes must be two pages (or less) and should clearly demonstrate relevant experience, skills, knowledge and abilities. A qualified candidate must possess work experience in preparing food and cooking simple foods and short orders in a cafeteria, restaurant or mess (must be reflected on your resume). Desirable work behaviors include neatness and good grooming, dependability, and the ability to work under pressure.

Skill and Knowledge: Basic knowledge of food preparation methods and procedures; skill to cook a limited variety of prepared or short order foods; ability to read and understand written food service material (food labels, standardized recipes, basic work instructions); skill in basic mathematical computations to multiply ingredients or determine servings; knowledge of tables of weights and measures and ability to convert from standard to metric; skill in operating, disassembling and cleaning basic food service equipment (griddles, broilers, food grinders); and knowledge of basic sanitation, infection and spoilage control procedures.

  • This job falls under the Federal Wage Schedule (FWS) pay system; FWS employees earn overtime pay and may receive Sunday premium pay and night differential. Non-foreign overseas allowances, COLA, and differentials will not be paid.

  • Most individuals will be brought in at the Step 1 rate of pay ($20.15 per hour). NAF pay setting rules apply.
