Role Summary
If you’re a skilled instrumentalist or vocalist, the U.S. Navy offers you the chance to perform professionally while serving your country. Musicians (MUs) in the Navy are part of elite ensembles including the U.S. Navy Band, Navy Ceremonial Band, and Fleet Bands.
You’ll entertain service members, boost morale, and represent the Navy to the public in performances across the globe — from formal ceremonies to jazz concerts, parades, and TV appearances.
Responsibilities
- Perform in Navy ensembles including:
- Ceremonial Bands
- Jazz Ensembles
- Rock/Pop/Contemporary Groups
- Marching Bands
- Chamber Groups
- Rehearse and perform across genres including classical, jazz, rock, Latin, and ceremonial music
- Represent the Navy at public events and media engagements
- Provide music for:
- Change of command ceremonies
- Military funerals
- Receptions, parades, official visits
- Serve as musical ambassadors to U.S. communities and foreign audiences
Work Environment
Navy Musicians serve globally, often in high-profile settings:
- Public stages and national TV broadcasts
- Overseas goodwill tours
- U.S. military installations
- Presidential and diplomatic events
- Assignments include:
- Washington, D.C.
- Navy Fleet Bands around the world
Training & Advancement
Entry & Audition
- All MUs must pass a competitive audition before enlisting
- Auditions evaluate:
- Musical proficiency
- Ensemble experience
- Sight-reading and stylistic versatility
Training
- Boot Camp — Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL
- "A" School — Navy School of Music, Little Creek, VA
- 21-week program
- Covers music theory, ear training, ensemble performance, marching

Qualifications & Requirements
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- High school diploma or GED
- Strong musical training and performance experience
- Must pass a live audition
- Meet physical and medical Navy enlistment standards
