Career Field: Arts & Communications
Service: U.S. Navy
Role Type: Enlisted (Active Duty only)
Work Location: Worldwide (U.S. and international performances)

Role Summary

Navy Musicians (MUs) know the power of performance. Nothing connects America’s Navy with audiences quite like world-class live music.

As a Navy Musician, you’ll perform for Americans at home and travel the world, bringing music to foreign audiences and Sailors on deployment. You may appear at presidential inaugurations, military ceremonies, diplomatic events, Navy celebrations and international parades, and even make guest appearances on live TV and radio broadcasts.

From marching in international tattoos to performing in brass bands, pop groups, jazz ensembles or small combos, Navy Musicians are among the most respected professional musicians in the world—playing everything from piano and guitar to tuba and clarinet.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as a member of parade band, concert band, jazz or rock band, and small ensembles
  • Perform music in styles including classical, march, soul/funk, pop, and country/bluegrass
  • Conduct, rehearse and perform for radio, TV and live performances
  • Compose, transcribe and arrange music for various ensembles
  • Perform public concerts and provide music for:
    • Military ceremonies
    • Educational outreach programs
    • Parades
  • Perform for Navy personnel and their families, the general public and at diplomatic functions

Work Environment

Navy Musicians may be assigned to:

  • United States Navy Band (Washington, D.C.)
  • U.S. Naval Academy Band (Annapolis, MD)
  • One of 11 Navy Fleet Bands stationed around the world

There is no typical Navy day. Musicians rehearse for musical excellence and perform in a wide variety of musical styles and ensembles, representing the U.S. Navy while boosting morale and instilling patriotism worldwide.

After initial training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes (Boot Camp), Navy Musicians attend “A” School at the Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA.

  • Training length: 21 weeks

Promotion opportunities are regularly available but competitive and based on performance.
