Recreation Aid (Trainee-Lifeguard) NF-01
Summary
This position is located at Fort Lee, VA - MWR Battle Drive Pool. This is an open continuous announcement to provide a ready pool of available applicants as needed. Applicants will be referred as vacancies occur.
Incentives and Bonuses: If hired for this position, DFMWR will pay for the lifeguard certification. Incentives will not be paid.
Duties
Note: This is a training position for a certified Lifeguard. Must participate in all required training (emergency rescue drills, emergency action plan simulations). Mandatory certifications must be complete within 30 calendar days of employment.
- Training: Lifeguarding and First Aid (American Red Cross or nationally recognized equivalent, i.e. Star Guard, YMCA, or ELLIS); American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED or equivalent (American Heart Association CPR/AED); First Aid.
- Responsible for assisting in the conduct of aquatic swimming and water survival training according to ATP 7-22.01 (as of October 2020).
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Must be able to work during the hours of operation, including nights and weekends.
- The dual compensation guidelines DO NOT apply to this position; all GS and NAF employees whether fulltime or part time are eligible to apply.
- Subject to satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks in accordance with AR 215-3, para.2, to include a Tier 1 background investigation.
- Failure to complete the required certification will result in removal from employment.
- Must have current health assessment documenting good physical health, free from communicable disease IAW current Army Policy.
- Must obtain within 30 days and maintain the following certifications: Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED from a nationally recognized agency.
- Lifeguard must have good vision (20/40 or better, corrected or uncorrected).
- Incumbent is required to follow environmental safeguards and wear personal protective equipment.
- Continuous exposure to sun and prolonged periods of high temperature and humidity. In case of exposure to infectious disease, incumbent is required to obtain the Hepatitis B vaccination series within a 24-hour period.
- May be assigned to irregular duties or when needed for special recreational events.
- Work hours may involve weekend, weekdays, holidays and night duty.
- Fifteen (15) year old lifeguard trainees must comply with the restriction of the DOL Child Labor Law.
Qualifications
Resumes must be two pages (or less) and should clearly demonstrate the applicant's relevant experience, skills, knowledge and abilities.
A qualified candidate must be able to swim and participate in the lifeguard certifications.
Ability to pass the Guard Ready Test (Lifeguard certification):
- Show proof of age: you need to be 15 by the last scheduled day of your class.
- Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing (front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination; goggles allowed only for this portion).
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: starting in the water, swim 20 yards with your face out of the water (no goggles); surface dive feet-first or head-first to a depth of 7'7" to retrieve a 10-pound dive brick; return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to the starting point with both hands holding the brick, keeping your face at or near the surface; exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Area of Consideration: This job is open to candidates who reside within a 30-mile radius of Fort Lee. (Military Spouses moving to the area within 30 days from the closing date and Involuntarily Separated Military (ISM) members claiming ISM Preference are included in this area of consideration.)

Allowances and Differentials: This job is part of a pay-banded system. Sunday premium pay and night differential pay may be authorized by the Garrison Commander. Non-foreign overseas allowances, COLA, and differentials will not be paid.
