SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
Summary
This position (PD# D1194000) is part of the Nevada Army National Guard. The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, and/or overhaul of a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.

Clarification from the agency: THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT ARMY NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERS ONLY. This is an open continuous announcement. Initial cutoff will be 09 JULY 2026. Recruitment will continue through the announcement closing date until the position is filled. This is a backfill for a deployer. Position is NTE early-mid 2027.
Duties
- Troubleshoots, performs maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles, including self-propelled artillery, tracked cargo and personnel carriers, road graders, mobile cranes, front loaders, bulldozers, generators, tanks, tracked combat vehicles, trucks, semi trailers, forklifts, and accessory equipment. Overhauls major systems including internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls.
- Troubleshoots equipment and diagnoses mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, and computer diagnostic tools. Utilizes embedded diagnostics and original equipment manufacturer system analyzers to determine the exact nature or extent of repair.
- Removes and disassembles engines and major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems. Makes repairs, overhaul, or modifications in accordance with repair specifications. May install pistons, sleeves, rings, bearings, rods, crankshafts, timing gears, and rocker arms, and perform fuel injection equipment repair, overhaul, rebuild, and calibration.
- Independently performs repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations. Provides technical guidance and specialized team leadership to lower grade employees. May provide Field and limited Sustainment maintenance at unit locations as part of a "contact team." Recovers and evacuates inoperable vehicles.
- Conducts readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment. Performs operational inspections and ensures vehicles are properly serviced. May serve as a commodity inspector during Command Maintenance Management evaluations (COMET) or as a member of a Maintenance Assistance Instruction Team (MAIT).
- May maintain and repair electronics communication equipment such as radios, field telephones, amplifiers, switchboards, recorders, and intercoms.
- Assists in the maintenance of production reports and records, and makes recommendations to the supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
- Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement (Title 32 USC). Compatible Military Assignment: ENLISTED E1 - E8; MOS 91 series, or must be willing and able to obtain in the first year of employment.
- National Guard Membership is required.
- Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.
- May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
- Must maintain local network access IAW AR 25-2.
- Wear the uniform appropriate for the member's grade and component.
- This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (Lautenberg Amendment) of the Gun Control Act.
- May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.
- For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must possess experience or training which demonstrates a working knowledge to read and interpret instructions, repair manuals, specifications, and drawings; knowledge of shop mathematics sufficient to use testing devices and measuring instruments; and proficiency in the use and maintenance of hand tools and equipment.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess experience or training demonstrating substantial mechanical skill to repair, overhaul, and rebuild equipment; experience to inspect and diagnose malfunctioning, wear and/or damage; ability to apply technical manuals, regulations, specifications and drawings to determine operation, assembly, and tolerances of the variety of equipment worked on; and experience using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and gages, including precision gages and measuring instruments.

There is no specific education requirement for this position. The applicant's record of experience and/or training must show possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to fully perform the duties of the position. - PERMANENT CHANGE OF STATION (PCS): PCS funding is NOT authorized.

How You Will Be Evaluated

- Knowledge in maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, and/or overhaul of a variety of complex combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify interconnected and complex systems on vehicles and equipment, including electronics sufficient to use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment.
- Skill to use a wide variety of test and diagnostics equipment to perform fault isolation and conduct repair.
