SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
Summary
This position (PD# D1195000) is part of the Nevada Army National Guard. The purpose of this position is to troubleshoot, repair, maintain, inspect, and/or overhaul a variety of complex combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment having complicated mechanical and non-mechanical systems with a variety of interconnected systems. Provides technical guidance and specialized team leadership to lower grade employees.

Clarification from the agency: THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT ARMY NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERS ONLY. This is an open continuous announcement. Initial cutoff will be 09 JULY 2026. Recruitment will continue through the announcement closing date until the position is filled. This is a backfill for a deployer. Position is NTE early-mid 2027.
Duties
- Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and major repair on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, and automotive vehicles, including self-propelled artillery, tracked cargo and personnel carriers, road graders, mobile cranes, front loaders, bulldozers, tanks, tracked combat vehicles, semi trailers, forklifts, and accessory equipment. Overhauls mechanically complex major systems including internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, hydraulic utility systems and controls, cross drive or similar multi-system transmissions, and intricate fuel injection systems.
- Troubleshoots equipment with mechanically complex major systems and diagnoses difficult performance problems by means of visual and auditory checks and test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges and computer diagnostic tools. Utilizes embedded diagnostics and specialized original equipment manufacturer system analyzers.
- Removes and disassembles engines and complex major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems. Makes repairs, overhaul, or modifications and improvises repair techniques when standard procedures are not available. Repairs equipment with a variety of interconnected systems including state-of-the-art electrical and electronic, fuel injection, interconnected gear reduction, and multiple engine systems.
- Independently performs repairs and maintenance functions with little or no supervision in remote locations. Provides technical guidance and specialized team leadership to lower grade employees. May provide Field and limited Sustainment maintenance at unit locations as part of a "contact team."
- Conducts readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment. Performs operational inspections and ensures vehicles are properly serviced. May serve as a commodity inspector during Command Maintenance Management evaluations (COMET) or as a member of a Maintenance Assistance Instruction Team (MAIT).
- Performs electrical repairs on complex state-of-the-art electrical and electronic systems requiring extensive training on specialized diagnostic equipment.
- Assists in the maintenance of production reports and records, and makes recommendations to the supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
- Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement (Title 32 USC). ENLISTED E1 - E8; MOS 91 series, or must be willing and able to obtain in the first year of employment.
- National Guard Membership is required.
- Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.
- May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
- Must maintain local network access IAW AR 25-2.
- Wear the uniform appropriate for the member's grade and component.
- This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (Lautenberg Amendment) of the Gun Control Act.
- May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.
- For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must possess experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and use of common tools and equipment in the line of work.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess experience or training leading to an extensive knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex interconnecting systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify interconnected complex systems. Extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art electrical, electronic, complex hydraulic, pneumatic, and other major non-mechanical systems, and of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their controls. Skill and knowledge to develop or improvise methods, alter parts, and make repairs in the absence of technical guidelines.
Education
There is no specific education requirement for this position. The applicant's record of experience and/or training must show possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to fully perform the duties.
