SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
Summary
This position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC, PD# D1194000, part of the Nevada Army National Guard. It is located in the Joint Forces Headquarters-State, Logistics Directorate, J4, Surface Maintenance Facility. The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, and/or overhaul of a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.

Duties
- Troubleshoots, performs maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, and automotive vehicles, including self-propelled artillery, tracked cargo and personnel carriers, road graders, mobile cranes, front loaders, conveyors, bulldozers, power shovels, compressors, generators, tanks, tracked combat vehicles, sedans, buses, all terrain vehicles, trucks, semi trailers, forklifts, tractors, and accessory equipment. Troubleshoots, repairs, and overhauls major systems including internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls. Makes repairs to assemblies and components such as voltage regulators, generators/alternators, and brake cylinders. Performs work in accordance with modification work orders, technical manuals, lubrication orders, maintenance bulletins, regulations, or management policies.
- Troubleshoots equipment and diagnoses the cause of mechanical failures through visual and auditory checks and/or test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, and computer diagnostic tools. Utilizes embedded diagnostics and original equipment manufacturer system analyzers to determine the exact nature or extent of repair, and determines what adjustments or additional repairs are necessary.
- Removes and disassembles engines and major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems. Makes appropriate repairs, overhaul, or modifications per proper repair specifications and procedures. Reassembles engines and other systems, and adjusts, tests, and reinstalls in vehicles and equipment as necessary. Makes adjustments and repairs to electrical and suspension systems. May install pistons, sleeves, rings, bearings, rods, crankshafts, timing gears, and rocker arms. May perform fuel injection equipment repair, overhaul, rebuild, and calibration duties using complex test and calibration equipment.
- Independently performs repairs and maintenance in remote locations by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts and components such as injectors, leaking wheel cylinders, corroded mufflers, fuel tanks, brake cylinders and worn brake shoes, voltage regulators, generators, injector pumps, and fuel pumps. Provides technical guidance and specialized team leadership to lower grade employees, and assists lower grade mechanics with major repair work. May provide Field and limited Sustainment maintenance at unit locations as part of a "contact team." Recovers and evacuates inoperable vehicles from the breakdown location.
- Conducts readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment. Performs operational inspections and ensures vehicles and equipment are properly serviced, including brake adjustments, replacing hydraulic fluids, greasing, and cleaning, and performs other preventive maintenance as required. Inspects supported equipment prior to use during Inactive Duty Training (IDT) and Annual Training (AT). May inspect in-process repair work of lower graded repairers, serve as a commodity inspector during Command Maintenance Management evaluations (COMET) or as a member of a Maintenance Assistance Instruction Team (MAIT), and instructs operators/crews and provides technical advice to supported units.
- May maintain and repair electronics communication equipment (radios, field telephones, amplifiers, switchboards, recorders, intercoms) by removing and replacing components and elements.
- Assists in maintaining production reports and records, makes recommendations to the supervisor, and plans, organizes, and performs technical analyses as assigned to maximize production.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
- National Guard Membership is required.
- Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement (Title 32 U.S.C.). Compatible Military Assignment: ENLISTED E1 to E7; Compatible MOS: 88, 91, 92. The Dual Status technician must obtain and maintain all military skill requirements for training, education, certifications, and experience.

- This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (Lautenberg Amendment) of the Gun Control Act. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and use of common tools and equipment in the line of work.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have experience or training leading to a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment; ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify such vehicles and equipment; knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems that affect the operation of mechanical systems; knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their controls; basic knowledge of electronics sufficient to identify and replace defective components such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards; and ability to repair or overhaul major components such as diesel, multi-fuel or gasoline engines, turbine engines, automatic and manual transmissions, drive line assemblies, electrical and electronic systems, fuel injection systems, and emission control systems.

There is no specific education requirement for this position. The applicant's record of experience and/or training must show possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to fully perform the duties of the position. How You Will Be Evaluated
You will be evaluated based on how well you meet the qualifications above. - Extensive knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex interconnecting systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.
- Extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art electrical, electronic, complex hydraulic, pneumatic, and other major non-mechanical systems that affect the operation of major mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of electronics sufficient to use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to identify and replace defective components such as electronic control modules, line replacement units, chips, sensors, and printed circuit boards.
- Skill to use a wide variety of test and diagnostic equipment to perform fault isolation and repair; ability to operate original equipment manufacturer computerized diagnostic equipment and embedded diagnostics; and understanding of how measurements and tolerances impact mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic, and electrical systems.
- Skill and knowledge to develop or improvise methods, alter parts, and make repairs in the absence of technical guidelines, including modifying parts to fit systems for which they were not designed and designing modifications to meet special test requirements.
