SURFACE MAINTENANCE REPAIRER

Summary

This position (PD# D1193000) is part of the Nevada Army National Guard, located in the Joint Forces Headquarters-State, Logistics Directorate, Surface Maintenance Facility. The purpose of this position is to perform limited diagnosis, routine repairs, and maintenance on combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment. May assist higher graded mechanics in the performance of maintenance duties.

Clarification from the agency: THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT ARMY NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERS ONLY. This is an open continuous announcement. The initial cutoff date for this position will be 23 JULY 2026. Recruitment will continue through the announcement date until the position is filled.

Duties

  • Performs limited diagnosis, routine repairs and maintenance on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles. Assists higher graded mechanics in the repair and/or overhaul of major systems including internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls.
  • Performs limited diagnoses to determine the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or basic test equipment such as compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters and pressure gauges.
  • Removes, replaces, adjusts, cleans and installs parts and components such as wheel seals, switches, sensors, fuel pumps, water pumps, power steering pumps, brakes, filters, radiators, bearings, springs, shock absorbers, wheel cylinders, starter motors, mufflers, and battery cables.
  • Independently performs routine repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations. Receives guidance from a higher graded mechanic or supervisor for non-routine and more complex repairs. May provide field maintenance at unit locations as part of a "contact team." Recovers and evacuates inoperable vehicles.
  • Conducts limited readiness and repair inspections. Performs Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services and ensures vehicles and equipment are properly serviced.
  • May perform routine maintenance and limited repairs on basic communication equipment (radios, field telephones, amplifiers, switchboards, recorders, intercoms). Performs minor body and fender or metal repairs, limited repairs on small arms, and minor repairs to canvas and leather items.
  • In conjunction with or in the absence of the Tools and Parts Attendant, may maintain supply documentation and the receipt, storage, issue, and inventory of tools and parts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

  • Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement (Title 32 USC). ENLISTED E1 to E8; Compatible MOS 11, 12, 13, 88, 91, 92.
  • This is a temporary position backfilling a deployer. Employment will be terminated upon deployer return or Hiring Manager discretion.
  • National Guard Membership is required.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Must maintain local network access IAW AR 25-2.
  • Wear the uniform appropriate for the member's grade and component.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (Lautenberg Amendment) of the Gun Control Act.
  • May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.
  • For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and use of common tools and equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have experience or training using common hand and power tools and a small variety of test and measurement devices to make mechanical repairs; experience removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories; a basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to vehicles; understanding of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships; and experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufacturer's repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.

There is no specific education requirement for this position. The applicant's record of experience and/or training must show possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to fully perform the duties. You must provide transcripts or other documentation to support any Training/Educational claims.

  • PERMANENT CHANGE OF STATION (PCS): PCS funding is NOT authorized.
  • SELECTED RESERVE INCENTIVE PROGRAM: Acceptance of this position will cause termination of Federal bonuses pursuant to respective SRIP.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated based on how well you meet the qualifications above. We will review your resume and responses to the Occupational Questionnaire, along with supporting documentation, to determine your ability to demonstrate the competencies related to limited diagnosis, routine repairs and maintenance; use of basic test equipment; removing, replacing, adjusting and installing parts and components; readiness and repair inspections; and preventive maintenance. If a determination is made that you have inflated your qualifications, your score may be adjusted.
