SURFACE MAINTENANCE REPAIRER

Summary

This position (PDCN D1193000) is part of the Alaska Army National Guard, JFHQ. Opened Area(s) of Consideration: 1, 2, 3 — Area 1: AKNG Permanent or Indefinite technicians; Area 2: All AKNG members; Area 3: All other current military members eligible to join the Alaska Army National Guard. Duties

  • Performs limited diagnosis, routine repairs and maintenance on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles. Assists higher graded mechanics in the repair and/or overhaul of major systems including internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls.
  • Performs limited diagnoses to determine the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or basic test equipment such as compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters and pressure gauges.
  • Removes, replaces, adjusts, cleans and installs parts and components such as wheel seals, switches, sensors, fuel pumps, water pumps, power steering pumps, brakes, filters, radiators, bearings, springs, shock absorbers, wheel cylinders, starter motors, mufflers, and battery cables.
  • Independently performs routine repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations. Receives guidance from a higher graded mechanic or supervisor for non-routine and more complex repairs. May provide field maintenance at unit locations as part of a "contact team." Recovers and evacuates inoperable vehicles.
  • Conducts limited readiness and repair inspections. Performs Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) and ensures vehicles and equipment are properly serviced.
  • May perform routine maintenance and limited repairs on basic communication equipment (radios, field telephones, amplifiers, switchboards, recorders, intercoms). Performs minor body and fender or metal repairs, limited repairs on small arms, and minor repairs to canvas and leather items.
  • In conjunction with or in the absence of the Tools and Parts Attendant, may maintain supply documentation and the receipt, storage, issue, and inventory of tools and parts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a trial period.
  • U.S. Citizenship and Secret Clearance is required.
  • Bargaining Unit: Bargaining.
  • APPOINTMENT FACTORS: Excepted/Enlisted in the Alaska Army National Guard.
  • MILITARY GRADE REQUIREMENT: Minimum military grade Private (PVT/E-1); maximum Sergeant First Class (SFC/E-7).
  • You will be required to serve a 2-year trial period.
  • Incumbent is subject to termination due to loss or reduction in funding for this position.
  • This position is a dual-status T32 position and requires military membership.
  • Requires operation of motor vehicles; candidates must have a valid state driver's license.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and use of common tools and equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE (WG-08): Must have at least 12 months of experience or training using common hand and power tools and a small variety of test and measurement devices to make mechanical repairs; experience removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories; a basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to vehicles; and experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufacturer's repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Resume must have complete dates and hours worked per week for each occurrence of both civilian and military employment. Use of year only will result in disqualification. Your record of experience and/or training must show possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to fully perform the duties, including basic knowledge of the mechanical makeup and operation of vehicle systems; techniques for removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing parts; basic understanding of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic system theories; skill to use basic test equipment; and ability to read and interpret parts lists, repair manuals, technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics.

Additional Information

  • OPEN TILL FILLED: closing dates occur every 30 days from the opening date; a certificate of eligible applicants will be issued to the selecting supervisor every 30 days until the position is filled.
  • INDEFINITE: Indefinite employees may be separated with 30 days' notice. Indefinite employment is temporary and expected to last more than one year but no more than five consecutive years, and may be converted to permanent without further competition.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (Lautenberg Amendment) of the Gun Control Act.
  • Current/former Federal employees must submit a copy of their latest SF-50.
  • The National Guard is exempt from the Veterans Preference Act.
  • Male applicants born after 12/31/59 must be registered under the Military Selective Service Act.
  • Direct Deposit participation is required if selected.

  • Trial Period: you will be required to serve a 2-year trial period; upon completion your employment will be terminated unless you receive written certification that your continued employment advances the public interest.
